AI is, after all, a generative tool without many guardrails. It can be used by anyone, and its hyper-fast development speed means users are finding ways around what guardrails are in place with a little prodding. ChatGPT-related malware is on the rise, with cybercriminals utilizing its capabilities with very little oversight.
Not only can these bots produce text, audio, and video, but they can also do it with parameters for specific audiences. Many phishing attempts are successful because they’re able to trick a user into thinking the source is secure. With the language of chatbots rapidly evolving to emulate human speech patterns across mediums, there’s also a rise in resources for cybercriminals to utilize.
While policymakers face the daunting task of balancing innovation and consumer protection by developing comprehensive regulations that hold AI systems accountable for data security, chatbots continue to grow, change, and absorb more information. Individuals interacting with chatbots may unknowingly share personal information, opening the door to potential misuse and identity theft. Likewise, businesses that deploy chatbots may face reputational damage, legal liabilities, and financial losses if customer data is compromised.

From a user perspective, responsible use ensures the protection of personal information and safeguards against potential privacy breaches.
